How to Add and Remove 7% VAT: Formulas and Examples
To add VAT, multiply the pre-tax price by 1.07. To remove VAT, split the tax out of a VAT-inclusive price by multiplying it by 7 and dividing by 107. For example, an item priced 1,070 baht including VAT is 1,000 baht plus 70 baht VAT. The 7% rate runs to 30 September 2027.
Pa makes one sale, then splits out the VAT on a calculator
One sale
By hand ↓
- Removes VAT bill by bill
- Writes it in the output tax book
- Adds it all up for P.P.30 at month end
Rounding differs, so totals are off by satang
Ann issues one bill and the VAT is split out for her
One sale
Done by the system ↓
- Pre-VAT price and VAT shown on the bill
- Posted to the books for you
- Totals flow into P.P.30
Open P.P.30 at month end and it is ready
7% VAT formulas
A common mistake is removing VAT by multiplying the total by 7%. For example, 535 × 7% gives 37.45 baht, which is 2.45 baht more than the real VAT, because the 535 baht already includes VAT.
Price including VAT from the pre-VAT price
Formula: Price × 1.07
Example: 500 × 1.07 = 535 baht
VAT from the pre-VAT price
Formula: Price × 7 ÷ 100
Example: 500 × 7 ÷ 100 = 35 baht
VAT inside a VAT-inclusive price
Formula: Total × 7 ÷ 107
Example: 535 × 7 ÷ 107 = 35 baht
Pre-VAT price from the total
Formula: Total × 100 ÷ 107
Example: 535 × 100 ÷ 107 = 500 baht
| What you want | Formula | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Price including VAT from the pre-VAT price | Price × 1.07 | 500 × 1.07 = 535 baht |
| VAT from the pre-VAT price | Price × 7 ÷ 100 | 500 × 7 ÷ 100 = 35 baht |
| VAT inside a VAT-inclusive price | Total × 7 ÷ 107 | 535 × 7 ÷ 107 = 35 baht |
| Pre-VAT price from the total | Total × 100 ÷ 107 | 535 × 100 ÷ 107 = 500 baht |

Removing VAT from total prices
A 99 baht price leaves satang after removing VAT. Our calculator rounds the pre-VAT price to 2 decimals first and lets VAT be the remainder, so adding them back gives exactly 99 baht. In Excel, type =A1*7/107 to remove VAT from the price in cell A1.

How long does 7% VAT last?
The VAT rate in the Revenue Code is 10%, but the government has reduced it to 7% including local tax for many years in a row. Most recently, Royal Decree No. 807 B.E. 2569 extended the 7% rate to 30 September 2027. If the rate changes, we will update this article.
Shops that must work out VAT on every bill
A VAT-registered shop must split out output tax on every bill and file the monthly total on P.P.30. Working it out by hand bill by bill, satang rounded in different ways makes the totals drift. When a shop issues bills in software, the system splits the pre-VAT price and VAT on every bill, posts to the books, and carries the totals into P.P.30.
